The K-2 students and I are in the process of getting ready for the annual school concert in early July 2015. Our class will be performing a short musical production called "Seussical the Musical." Our musical will be based on Dr. Seuss' "Green Eggs and Ham", and we are all very excited (yet a teeny-tiny bit nervous...at least, I am) about the production. Currently, we are practicing reading our lines and singing the selected musical number. By late-March, I will be asking the students to help design the props we will be using for the show. I am looking forward to see the progress the K-2 students have made with regards to mutual cooperation and group-effort. |

I have taken an excerpt of the book and have made the K-3 students read the excerpts individually. We will continue to practice and develop reading fluency until the end of the school year. The K-3 students have also engaged in a Sight Words Scavenger Hunt. The Sight Words are taken from “I Can Read With My Eyes Shut” and each word has points varying from 1 to 4. The harder the word, the more points it has. We have made Scavenger Hunt Telescopes to help us find the words. This activity is meant to challenge and motivate the students to recognise, read, and spell out the words we've covered in "I Can Read With My Eyes Shut."
I’ve shown the kids many places in the world on Google Earth. We’ve traveled to Vancouver, Hong Kong, London, Paris and much more! We’ve also “traveled” to Mars and the Moon together during the activity. This activity is meant to help develop passion for learning and reading. The kids have really enjoyed the activity and we are determined to make Reading Awareness Month a memorable one!
The entire field trip has been thoroughly educational yet enjoyable. Once the students are back in class, they are observably more engaged and enthusiastic when talking about zoo animals and their diets. We’ve also read a Sight Words Book titled “Run” this week. The students love it because it’s about zoo animals on a hot summer day. They are likewise more engaged with reading this week because of what they have seen at the zoo.
Two thumbs up to you, Nathan! Thank-you for the pictures and videos. - Ms. Natalie
each student reach his or her full potential. My most important job is to help each student become fluent readers. "Reading can take you to places you've never been to before and sometimes to places you've never even dreamed of." March is Reading Awareness Month and the perfect time to ignite that passion for reading. Since this is the case, SBI has decided to hold a Reading Campaign for the Pre-K to K-3 grade levels. We are determined to emphasise reading with our students, getting them to read and to love reading.
A passion for reading needs to be nurtured throughout a child’s years of formal education. One step in helping an emergent reader is to gain the confidence in reading out loud. That is a crucial step and skill we will be focusing on in all of our Reading classes.
