One of my favourite books to use with young children is Dr. Seuss' "Green Eggs and Ham" because of the various lessons found in the book. This book is ideal for the students in the K-2 and K-3 classes because of the simple vocabulary, the fun rhyming dialogue, the rhythmic patterns, and the lovable quirky characters. We have started our Monday classes with a reading of "Green Eggs and Ham." The K-3 students have done a terrific job in helping me tell the story. I have also attached a PDF file of the book for personal reading at home. Your child can read the book online while following along with the audio recording from SBI's K-3 class. However, I might have to add that it did get a bit rowdy and noisy at certain points because the students were having so much fun in engaging with the story :) K-2's Crazy-Coloured FoodThe K-2 class' journal starter for this week was: Imagine a world where your favourite food has "crazy colours." The students were then asked to draw and write about their favourite food undergoing change in colour. This activity mirrors the plot of Dr. Seuss' "Green Eggs and Ham." I've read the story to the children and they were asked to use their imagination to create a similar situation. |

The reason why I emphasise video recordings and oral (speaking) skills in our classes is because children at this age feel more comfortable to communicate by speech rather than on paper. In order to make sure that my students have understood the story and assignment, it is more accurate to test their literacy skills using this method. Writing is important, of course, but the little details can be captured from speech. Additionally, this was a lot of fun and the children were very proud in sharing their creations.
