The main reason why I chose to read "Horton Hears a Who" with my students at SBI is not because I'm starting to miss Canada and my morning cup of Tim Hortons coffee (although that might be the subconscious reason behind my decision)... Tim Hortons: The reason why it's so hard to find a Starbucks in Canada. |
But I chose to focus on this book because of it's lessons on true friendship, loyalty, and kindness. The book tells the story of Horton the Elephant, who while minding his own business in the jungle of Noor, hears a small dusk speck calling to him for help. He eventually learns that there are little people living on the dust speck called "The Whos". Horton then vows to protect his little friends from harm and proclaims repeatedly throughout the book that "A person's a person, no matter how small." | |
The students have also made their own clover with a white dust speck on it (a DIY pompom model) to help remind them of this important message. We've had a really great time discussing the book in class today, and we will be continuing to study this story over the next few weeks.
