What is Water? Before conducting the experiment, we've re-discussed the basic physical properties of water: 1) It's made up of hydrogen and oxygen (H2O). 2) Water is generally thought of as a liquid, but water can exist (and is the only natural substance that can exist) in three states of matter: solid, liquid, and gas. Water is solid when it turns into ice, and it is gas when it evaporates. |
4) Water is fundamental to all living things. Humans need water to survive. 82% of our blood is made up of H2O.
From this experiment, we have practiced how to reason and use the scientific method. By making hypotheses about what will cause ice to melt, students learn how to be reason and use the scientific method to come up with answers.
Melting Ice
Other than having to endure an hour of endless chattering about Queen Elsa and making ice, the K-2 boys and I (have survived and) had a lot of fun racing with each other and seeing whose ice block will melt first. The girls, obviously, enjoyed the activity. Although, they preferred making ice as opposed to melting it. Let it go, girls. Let it go... Sorry. Meh. Not really. | |
