| March is Reading Awareness Month. Thus, we will be focusing more on reading fluency and literacy development in our Reading and Phonics classes. As part of our preparation for March, I have created a Sight Words Scavenger Hunt for the K-2 students. We have covered the Sight Words over the course of 4 months. However, this Scavenger Hunt will demonstrate to me (and the students) how well they can read and recognize the words they’ve learned. First, we've made our Scavenger Hunt "telescopes". The kids have suggested using safari-themed paper since we will be going to the zoo next week. Once the telescopes are ready, I’ve sent out the students in pairs to find the Sight Word I’ve read and spelled out loud. Once the students start to understand the process, all the students were asked to participate in finding more Sight Words I’ve called out. |
What is Literacy?
By combining fun and play with education, the students will be able to learn without realising that they are in fact doing an academic exercise. The word "academic" itself has powerful connotations of serious (perhaps even stressful) learning at school. So by showing the students that learning can be something that's enjoyable will make them (hopefully) have a more positive attitude towards school and academics. This will lead to a higher quality in the student's individual learning experience and literacy development.
