To help my students further develop their vocabulary and literacy skills this week, I've decided to get them engaged in a pizza-making activity (paper pizzas, of course). This activity is meant to address the following issues:

| I've started the lesson by identifying the different ingredients required to make a pizza. Once the children are familiar with the names of the ingredients, I've engaged the students into a short game of role play. I became the customer and they became the pizza chefs. I gave out specific orders for the pizza I want, and the children have to make pizzas according to the customer's (my) orders. After a while, I've allowed the children to make pizzas using their favourite toppings. Once the children are done gluing the finished pizzas together, they're asked to fill in a Pizza Math worksheet. The |
Later that afternoon, the K-2 students were asked to individually read a Sight Words book titled "Dinner". The book fitted perfectly with our activity (and vice versa) because it talked about the procedures in making pizza. The children were able to read the book by themselves more quickly and fluently because they're now familiar with the different vocabulary terms.
